My Soul on Show.

    

I’ve had so many opportunities and great things happen this year but this one will take some beating!  At the end of an amazing week in London attending Scott Robert’s Next Level workshop everyone chose one of their images to be part of a gallery exhibition located in the city’s hip and trendy East End.  Believe me, to see my work blown up to a massive 20×30″ in a gallery show is one of the most satsifying feelings I’ve ever experienced and hopefully the start of things to come! I could have selected any number of images for the gallery show but this was one of a small handful that stood head and shoulders above the rest. In fact if this had been the only image I had taken during the course of the week I would have been happy because I think this image says more about me and who I am than all the other imagery I took combined (something Scott recognised before I did!).  Why? It’s an image that was born out of a vision that I’ve nutured in my mind long before arriving in London but for the very first time everything came together and I was able to complete part of that vision.  And somehow the more I look at it the more I learn about myself and the photographer I’m destined to become.  It does indeed have a little bit of my soul. A huge thanks to Dave who was the ‘MAN’ and organised the whole gallery exhibition single handed including the venue (The Jago), the DJ and all the prints! We had the easy job of turning up ready with a slideshow to project all our best images from the week and simply talk to all the guests about ourselves!.  He was a star, a true gentleman and everyone’s best friend. And just in case you didn’t realise the women in the image is in fact Ama (yes it is her, honest!) who I had the pleasure of shooting last year shortly after returning from my very first Next Level workshop in Paris.  You can view that shoot -here- Thanks to everyone who came and showed their support, see you next year!   Just a few snaps I took before it got too crazy and too HOT!   And a small video clip!     Subscribe in a reader

Good Times and Next Level London

I’m back!! I arrived from Korea a few days ago where I had a great time and met so many wonderful people!  There was a crazy wait at the airport, an engagement session, a wedding, everyone from the JSEM church, a bowling extravagana, lots of food I couldn’t eat, a shoot with a supercool couple & HOT Haewon and a visit to the police station courtesy of Scott, but more about that later!  For now I just wanted to share with you my favorite image from Erin & Christian’s engagement shoot that I assisted Scott with the day before their wedding!

I’m off down to London today for the ‘Next Level’ London workshop and can’t wait! This is Scott’s first UK workshop and I’ll be hard at work trying to help things run as smooth as possible and playing the role of tour guide, darting around the streets of London. 

This one is a bit special too because as part of the progamme
we will have the honour of photographing some very special families who are
part of the organisation ‘CHEER’ – women who are former victims of abuse and
are single mothers working hard to get back on their feet again.

We’ll also be having a
gallery exhibition of some of the fine art imagery we capture during the week
on Saturday 9th August from 6-10pm at “The Jago” on Redchurch Street.  So if
you’re in London (and even if you’re not!) and want to be inspired
by great imagery, great music (we have a DJ!), meet some wonderful people and
party, party party then we’d love you to come along and join us!  See you
there!

 Jane & Jason: San Francisco

 

I’ve just arrived in Korea!!!  With all the crazy running around to get organised for my trip I just couldn’t find the time to post before I left the UK so this one comes all the way from the arrival lounge deep inside Seoul ICN International Airport!  I’ve had a six hour wait (one to go!) for Scott Robert to arrive from LA who I’ll be shooting an engagement session and wedding with later on this week.  I’m so grateful for this opportunity and so excited to be in this part of the world for the very first time!

 

The last time I assisted Scott was for the wedding of Jane & Jason back in May so I thought it fitting to post some highlights from their beautiful day.  I also assisted Scott with their engagement session on the streets of San Francisico, a city that completely won me over with its quirkiness and charm.  Jane & Jason are a magical couple and I truly wish them everlasting happiness as they embark on the journey of their lives together.

 

Many of these shots were art directed by Scott and I merely shot over his shoulder or from a different angle.  It was an incredible learning experience to see him create the SR magic before my very eyes and a huge part of the reason I’m in Korea right now ready to do it all over again!!

 ELEMENTZ SHOOT

Something out of the ordinary!  Elementz is a long established group who are rapidly becoming houshold names in the UK Hip-hop fraternity and have performed alongside acts such as Black Eyed Peas.  They booked me last month to shoot images for their up and coming new release.  I’ve never attempted a shoot like this before but I’m a firm believer in stepping outside of your comfort zone to challenge yourself to something new.  So armed with my camera, two flashes and my two trusted lighting stands Dana and my assistant Jermaine (thanks guys!), I set about creating images that reflected their unique and individual sound.  I can’t think many times when I’ve had so much fun on a shoot!

 “I can ride B, I can ride!”

 

 

I did plan on telling you about my recent computer woes and a recent purchase of mine that has breathed life back into my workflow but yesterday something far more exciting happend and I want to share this video with you instead.  My dear mother has achieved so much in her life but has never been able to achieve the seemingly difficult task of riding a bike. Well around a month ago she signed up for lessons with a professional instructor and hey presto she’s done it! Yesterday she asked me to help her practice and I witnessed for the first time something my mother’s been wanting to do for years! I’m so proud of her and it makes me so happy because I know how much she wanted it.  It certainly pays to get professional instruction, if I had not done so myself it would have taken me years to achieve the results I’m getting now with my photography. Here’s to progress!!!

NEW YORK, NEW YORK

Finally! Sorry you had to wait this long to see some of my NYC eye candy.  I can’t quite believe it’s a whole month since I arrived back to the UK!  My first trip to the Big Apple was back in 2004 with family and friends and whilst I did enjoy myself I never really got to see much of this immense city.  Things were very different this time around! The theme of this workshop was ‘Funky’ & ‘Fabulous’ but I think the word CRAZY should have been included in there! I indulged in an incredible 3 day shooting extravaganza in Flushing, Brooklyn and Soho with 16 photographers and countless models to choose from.  As you can imagine there was very little sleep (who needs it anyway when you’re having so much fun!), eating out at 1am in the morning (I passed on the pigs ear dish!), embarassng mishaps and many magical moments that only occur under the extremes of a Next Level workshop.

 

I was inspired by all the photographers who shared in this unforgettable trip and I really felt like by attending this workshop I was able to get closer to achieving my creative visions.  I have also been experimenting with my post-processing techniques inspired by the awesome work of Scott Robert our master teacher and Tauran Woo who unfortunately couldn’t make it to NYC this time round. 

 

Huge thanks to Joyce, Anita, Keith, May, Yili, Alison, Sherry, Laura & Christian and all the other models I met but didn’t get to shoot.  You were all fantastic!

Huge props to the gentleman who let me pose May and Yili in his ice-cream truck.  I tried to give him a tip but he wouldn’t accept any payment and when I attempted to make a purhase instead he made up a huge ice-cream to give May an Yili as a gift.  He said it was an honour to be part of something special! An act of kindness that is increasingly rare these days.

GREAT NEWS!!! I was recently featured on the Weddingbee by my friend Jane aka Mrs. Cherry Blossom!  I was very fortunate to meet the wonderful Jane and her husband Jason while assisting Scott Robert on their engagement session back in April. I had such an amazing time that day I just couldn’t resist flying back out to San Francisco in May to assist Scott on their two-day wedding extravaganza, a stunning occasion!  I am so honored she would feature me on the WeddingBee.  Made up of a dynamic community of real brides (bees) across the US this site is a hugely popular online wedding resource for the modern bride-to-be offering inspiration and tons of information and advice and visited by thousands of women every day!  Jane has worked so hard to give her readers an insight into her beautiful life and share with them her wisdom on all things wedding related, she deserves nothing less than lifelong happiness!

These are a few highlights from Becky and Rob’s wedding day that I had the pleasure of shooting last weekend in Birmingham, UK.  I met Becky only twice before but had never met Rob so it was great to see them together for the frst time on such a glorious day.  They are a great couple and destined for a lifetime of happiness I garantee it! Wherever they’re honeymooning right now I hope they are enjoying an amazing time.

Hot weather, lots of food, dancing, great people, fantastic models, more food, Key West, Mexico, the open sea, room service, sunset, sunrise, sea air, posing, lighting, friendship, beaches, dessert, karaoke, one really (really) bad dj, even more food, the locals, the laughter, Miami, magic tricks, not much sleep, marketing, critique, sharing, great teaching, a tan, stories, experiences and well of course the joy of photography! These are just some of the many ingredients (in no particular order) that made this one of the best workshops EVER! It already seems so long ago. How I wish I could go back and do it all over again. Someday I will!
